INTUITION

In a figure less likeable than Lennon, ‘Intuition’ would indeed be a very annoying song. Set to a cloying, bouncy melody, it’s a number that catches John on a good day, celebrating his supposed talent for making the best of life and – just a little smugly – implying we could all do worse than to follow his example. John may well have been right to trust his instincts – they may not be rational, he implies, but they have a wisdom of their own – but his better songs acknowledged the darkness and the turbulence of his inner life, as this disposable ditty so lamentably fails to do. As a skip-along lilt, it’s poor. As a recipe for psychic sunshine, it’s a case of “the blind leading the blind”.
